Short version

Long version

Bote al Agua (“Boat in the Water”) is a non-profit based in Tigre, a river town at the gateway to the Paraná Delta, north of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was founded and is run by journalist and communicator Daniel Helft. It uses project-based learning: in each workshop, a group of school-age kids builds a full-size wooden rowing boat with hand tools, in weekly sessions over about three months. Along the way they learn applied maths, physics, tool skills, planning and teamwork; at the end, the boat goes into the river. Kids from Tigre neighbourhoods, public and private schools and Delta schools have taken part: according to the newspaper La Nación, more than 100 kids built about 20 boats in the first four years. The organisation also runs boat building courses for adults and works to keep a traditional Delta craft alive.
